As noted in my early post, PCCC has obtained approval from the feds to resume mining at the John Henry Mine. The next step in the process is for Washington State DOE to issue a draft NPDES (water quality) permit. This draft will be open for public comment and represents an important opportunity for our community to express our concerns about discharge of high phosphorus concentrations into Lake Sawyer. Although PCCC's actions may represent nothing more than apparent continuation of a scam intended only to further delay mine reclamation costs, we need to express our concerns and make sure that the tightest possible discharge standards are in place and enforceable. These standards will apply to both mining and reclamation.
Following is a link to DOE - John Henry Mine NPDES. It provides information about how to receive notification from DOE once they prepare a draft NPDES permit for public review and comment. DOE will listen to us so long as we stick to the facts and backed up by the data. Please participate. We need your help to make sure that Lake Sawyer water quality is not further degraded.
